The Journey of Flavors: The Story of Rubén and His Arepas in Berlin

Rubens Arepas: A Latin corner in Berlin, gluten-free and full of memories

Taste has the power to transport us. At Rubens Arepas in Berlin, every bite of the Venezuelan arepas can bring you back to your grandmother’s kitchen, to the comfort of home, or to the people and places you miss. Eating isn’t just about filling up – it’s about sharing, connecting, and traveling together through memory.

From Caracas to the kitchen

Rubén knows this well. Every time he makes arepas, he cooks as if he were still preparing food for friends at home – with the same care that turns ingredients into more than just food.

His passion for cooking started at 17, in Caracas, when he worked in his family’s small café. There, alongside his grandfather, he learned the craft of being a barista. That first experience sparked a path that would turn every dish into a bridge back to his roots.

Migration, work, and the meaning of food

Migration brought Rubén to kitchens across different cafés and restaurants, where he discovered that gastronomy is not only a business – it’s also a human bond. Good food matters, yes, but what makes you return is the warmth of the people who serve it.

Far from Venezuela, his home kitchen became a refuge. Cooking familiar flavors connected him to his homeland. Over time, through trial and error, he started sharing the recipes that carried his memories with friends and family.

Venezuelan arepas: tradition in every filling

For Rubén, every sauce and every filling deserves attention. He experiments, tweaks, asks for tips from his family back home – until he gets it just right. The result: authentic Venezuelan flavor in every arepa.

Arepas are as versatile as life itself: They can be rich and hearty, like the sweet fried plantain with shredded beef in a classic pabellón venezolano. Or light and vegetarian, like the traditional dominó with black beans and cheese.

A taste of home in Berlin

Every bite tells a story. And in Rubén’s arepas, you can taste his: that of a young man who found in gastronomy not only a profession but also a way to keep his memories alive and share them with anyone who sits at his table.

Today, Rubens Arepas in Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg is a place where food lovers, neighbors, and Latin Americans in Berlin can reconnect with authentic flavors – always with 100% gluten-free options.
