Rubens Arepas in Berlin: A Latin Flavor Haven for Gluten-Free, Homemade Food in Friedrichshain
In the heart of Friedrichshain, an aroma that hugs you
Right in the center of Friedrichshain and Mitte/Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, you’ll find Rubens Arepas - a cozy little spot where the scent of corn dough and fried plantains greets you before you even step inside. With a warm smile, one of the staff - or even a founder - will likely welcome you in.
This isn’t just a restaurant: it’s a story that’s still being written, one arepa at a time, slow-cooked with care.
A friendship turned into flavor
Rubén, who started his career as a barista in one of Caracas’ most iconic cafés, began offering his arepas and sauces to friends and family.
Rubens Arepas began with Rubén Caría a Venezuelan deeply rooted in his family’s culinary traditions, and Simón Cardona, a Guatemalan-German with a shared love for Latin American flavors. Their friendship quickly evolved into a mission: to bring the comforting taste of home to Berlin.
Soon after, Francisco Uribarri joined the project, bringing fresh energy and commitment to what would become a beloved Latin food destination.
From Berlin markets and clubs to a home on Warschauer Str.
Before finding a permanent home, Rubens Arepas traveled around Berlin - serving hungry crowds at markets like Südstern and Wedding, and in clubs like Else, Renate, and Katerblau. These early days helped shape a loyal community that kept asking: “Where can we find you every day?”
In 2020, the answer arrived. Rubens Arepas opened its doors at Warschauer Str. 81, and has been serving arepas, good music, and a warm atmosphere every day from 12:00 to 22:00 ever since.
Authentic Venezuelan arepas, gluten-free and vegan options
Rubén honors his family’s recipes with classic arepas like Reina Pepiada and Pabellón, while also offering new flavors for diverse dietary needs - like the vegan Dominó and vegetarian Coleada.
Most of the menu is 100% gluten-free (except for the tequeños). You can also enjoy sides like fried yuca or traditional drinks made in-house, such as Venezuelan chicha and papelón with lime. Every dish is handmade, natural, and cooked with love.
A place for foodies, locals, and Latinos missing home
Rubens Arepas attracts a wonderfully diverse crowd - regulars from the early days, foodies who discovered the spot on social media, and many Latin Americans looking to reconnect with the tastes of home.
It may look like fast food, but everything here is slow-cooked and thoughtfully prepared. It’s comfort food that feels like a hug from your abuela.
More than a restaurant: a space for community
At Rubens Arepas, it’s not just about the food - it’s about connection, culture, and comfort. It’s a space where homemade meals meet music, memory, and the joy of being together.
It’s a continuous celebration of Latin American culture in the heart of Berlin.
